Reviewing Shawnee State women and men
Both programs currently sit in a position where the Shawnee State women's and men's soccer programs, for the second season in a row since joining the conference in 2023, will qualify for the River States Conference Tournament.
Shawnee State women
Shawnee State's women, who scored two thrilling victories against West Virginia Tech and Brescia (Ky.) by 2-1 counts Thursday and Saturday, are currently in the sixth and final qualifying position for the River States Conference Tournament -- sitting one point ahead of Brescia for that sixth and final spot. With seven points to its credit, the Bears are also only three points back from Indiana-East, whom the Bears tied on its own home pitch at Shawnee Turf back on Oct. 3, for third place in the River States Conference Standings.
Annie Coriell, who scored two goals total in Shawnee State's victories over the Golden Bears and the Bearcats last week, led the Bears by scoring the match's first goal in a 2-1 victory over West Virginia Tech, and completed a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Brescia with an 85th minute penalty kick to seal up her first career River States Conference Player of the Week Award.
Harlee Brand, who has saved 26 out of the last 30 shots that she's faced between the posts, continues to lead Shawnee State as the freshman from Winchester, Ohio has played splendid soccer in goal. Isabella Riddle, who scored a 37th minute goal right after Coriell's initial blast against West Virginia Tech that proved to be the game-winner, supplied three additional shots, and two on goal, against Brescia while Haynna Addy scored a 59th minute goal that was not only the 16th of her career, but helped spark the Shawnee State comeback.
Shawnee State men
As for the Shawnee State men, balance continues to win the day for the Bears -- as SSU currently stands fourth overall in the River States Conference Standings with seven points, where it has continued to sit throughout much of the season. The Bears are currently tied with Midway (Ky.) for the fourth position overall in the RSC rundown.
In all, 12 different players have scored a goal for Shawnee State during the 2024 season while 11 have at least one assist on the year. Four players have at least three or more goals, with the following leading Shawnee State's production:
- 6-0 junior Nikos Pontikis (six goals, three assists, 15 points)
- 5-10 freshman Cameron Thompson (five goals, 10 points)
- 5-9 senior Marco Riva (four goals, four assists, 12 points)
- 6-1 freshman João Coqueti Léo (three goals, one assist, seven points)
Along with the above quartet, 5-11 senior goalkeeper Eric Green, who is one of three players to play and start in all 14 contests, has 63 saves to his credit to lead the Bears between the posts.
