SSU swimming wins 21 different events in victory over Pikeville in dual meet

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The swimming program at Shawnee State enjoyed a successful meet against fellow Mid-South Conference foe Pikeville -- as the Bears won 21 out of the 26 contested events between the men's and women's swimming realm Saturday at the Pikeville Area Family YMCA, winning both the men's and women's swim meets Saturday with relative ease in the process, with the men winning by a 164-35 margin and the women taking home a 127-29 triumph.

A rundown of events are below:

Women

In its own victory Saturday over Pikeville, the Shawnee State women won 10 out of the 12 events that were contested. Julia Luallen, De-Nicha Lewis and Abigail Bosler each won two individual events apiece.

  • Julia Luallen (13:47.43) won the women's 1,000 yard freestyle
  • Mercedes Mwebeiha (1:06.56) won the women's 100 yard backstroke
  • De-Nicha Lewis edged fellow teammate Jordan Patterson by a tenth of a second (27.83 to 27.93) to win the 50 yard freestyle
  • Abigail Bosler defeated Pikeville's Madelyn Smith by five full seconds (1:13.31 to 1:18.31) to take the 100 yard breaststroke
  • De-Nicha Lewis, Mercedes Mwebeiha and Jordan Patterson went 1-2-3 in the 100 yard freestyle, with less than two seconds separating the trio from one another in the event
  • Julia Luallen put together a 200 yard backstroke time that was nearly three seconds faster than her seed time, swimming a 2:37.88
  • Emily Boggs posted a 3:00.85 to win the 200 yard breaststroke
  • Bosler and fellow teammate Katie McCafferty went head-to-head in the 100 yard butterfly, with Bosler's 1:04.44 edging McCafferty's 1:07.23 for the win
  • Mwebeiha, Bosler and Lewis were each a part of Shawnee State's winning units in the 200 yard medley relay (2:03.49) as well as the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:49.74). McCafferty teamed with the trio in the former winning effort, while Patterson contributed to the latter event victory.

Men

As for the men, the Bears were able to win 11 out of the 14 events contested on Saturday.

  • Jose Enrique Rosado Lara won the 1,000 yard freestyle, nabbing a 11:35.41 and running nearly 11 seconds faster than his seeding time in the process
  • Tony Goodwin, Alex Ray and Thomas Kessler went 1-2-3 in the men's 200 yard freestyle, with Goodwin swimming a 1:50.39 to claim the victory
  • Evan Ater, Josiah Ramdeen and Evan Siberell also went 1-2-3 in the men's 100 yard backstroke, with Ater's 57.43 winning out
  • Alex Ray, Tony Goodwin and Evan Ater went 1-2-3 in the 50 yard freestyle.
  • Tony Goodwin, Josiah Ramdeen and Evan Bower went 1-2-3 in the 100 yard freestyle, with Goodwin edging Ramdeen by just .34 seconds (50.44 to 50.78) en route to winning the event
  • Allan Gonzalez posted a strong effort in the men's 100 yard breaststroke, posting a 1:05.96 to swim nearly five seconds faster than his seeding time and better Pikeville's Jacob Rubado by almost two seconds
  • Evan Bower's 2:13.56 won the men's 200 yard butterfly
  • Luke Lunsford and Jose Enrique Rosado Lara finished first and second in the 200 yard breaststroke
  • For the fifth and final time, Shawnee State got a 1-2-3 finish in an event on the men's side as Kami Walusimbi, Ian Montgomery and Evan Siberell went 1-2-3 with Walusimbi's winning time and Siberell's third place showing being separated by just .35 seconds.
  • Shawnee State's 'A' and 'B' teams each went 1-2 in the 200 yard medley relay and 200 yard freestyle relay, with Ramdeen, Siberell, Gonzalez and Ray edging Ater, Lunsford, Bower and Kessler by 2.4 seconds in the 200 yard medley relay and Walusimbi, Ramdeen, Ray and Bower beating out Ater, Kessler, Gonzalez and Lunsford by just over 2.3 seconds in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The winning times in both events were 2:03.71 and 1:35.71, respectively.

Shawnee State returns to action 10 days from now as the Bears will compete from Wednesday, Nov. 20 through Saturday, Nov. 23 at the four-day Bulldog Invite, which is being held by Union Commonwealth at the Union College Center for Health & Learning in Barbourville, Ky.
