SSU swimming gets victories from Goodwin, D. Lewis, Siberell, women's 200 medley relay unit in impressive dual meet effort against Cumberlands (Ky.)
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The women's and men's swimming programs at Shawnee State showcased an impressive effort Friday evening -- with the Bears getting four victories and nabbing second-place finishes in five additional events in a competitive showing against the Cumberlands (Ky.) Patriots' women's and men's swimming squads in a dual meet that was held at the Warsaw Aquatic Center in Portsmouth Friday afternoon.
The women's 200 medley relay unit, which has been a highly competitive unit that has simply continued to get better all season long, nabbed an impressive victory to begin the meet as Shawnee State's 'A' relay unit bested Cumberlands (Ky.)'s 'A' group by a tight margin (2:10.30 to 2:11.06) en route to starting the meet off with a bang.
De-Nicha Lewis -- who made up one-quarter of that winning 200 medley relay unit -- went on to combine with fellow teammate Abigail Bosler to deliver a thrilling finish for those in attendance in the 100 fly -- with Lewis edging Bosler for the win (1:09.82 to 1:09.90) in what was a season best time for Lewis and a personal best time for Bosler in the event.
On the men's side, Tony Goodwin again proved to be stout. With his mother -- who flew in from Antigua and traveled over 20 hours to attend her first collegiate meet in person -- in attendance, Goodwin showed every bit the promise that the freshman has held throughout his career as his 24.82 allowed Goodwin to win the race by nearly three-tenths of a second.
Siberell helped dovetail Goodwin's performance with his own effort in the 100 breaststroke -- as the senior from nearby Chillicothe won the event by nearly three full seconds in another impressive showing from the veteran hand, who swam a 1:07.86.
Along with Bosler's second place finish to De-Nicha Lewis in the 100 fly, Reagan Lewis, who was competing in her first official swimming event of the season following the conclusion of volleyball in the fall semester, collected a second place in the 50 freestyle. Mercedes Mwebeiha finished second in the 100 breaststroke, Katie McCafferty swam a season-best time in the 200 yard individual medley to claim a runner-up showing and the women's 200 freestyle relay group also finished second to conclude the meet's festivities.
In addition to Bosler's personal best time in the 100 fly and the season-best times for De-Nicha Lewis and McCafferty in the 100 fly and 200 individual medley, respectively, the following swimmers combined to set 16 personal bests in 11 different events. They are as follows:
