SSU swimming sends seven seniors out in style on Senior Day with sweep of Pikeville (151-46 women, 140-23 men)

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Seeing a dedicated group of seniors come together to win a meet is always a great thing to witness.

The men's and women's swimming programs enjoyed a fantastic outing in a dual meet against Pikeville (Ky.), winning 23 events between the two programs en route to sending Emily Boggs, Evan Bower, Eric Green, Maggie Kayt Franks, Jordan Patterson, Jose Enrique Rosado Lara and Evan Siberell out in style in the final meet for all seven individuals at Warsaw Aquatic Center in Portsmouth Saturday afternoon.

WOMEN

On the women's side, Shawnee State was led by Abigail Bosler, who took home individual event victories in the 100 individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle. Multi-sport athlete Reagan Lewis also joined Bosler as a multi-event winner individually, placing in the top spot in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.

Behind the duo, the following women also won events:

  • De-Nicha Lewis (100 fly)
  • Katie McCafferty (200 breaststroke)
  • Julia Luallen (100 backstroke)
  • Emma Conley (800 freestyle)

Following Bosler, McCafferty, Emilie Wasnich, Patterson and Conley assured Shawnee State a sweep of the top five positions in the 100 individual medley, while Mercedes Mwebeiha, Boggs and Conley helped SSU sweep the top four spots in the 50 free. De-Nicha Lewis and Patterson completed a 1-2-3 for SSU in the 400 free, while Boggs and Wasnich finished as event runner-ups in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, respectively.

In relay events, Shawnee State's 200 medley relay unit of Mwebeiha, Bosler, De-Nicha Lewis and Reagan Lewis emerged victorious while the 200 freestyle relay squad of Reagan Lewis, Mwebeiha, Patterson and De-Nicha Lewis won that event.

MEN

In men's competition, Shawnee State received victories in two events apiece from Thomas Kessler and Evan Ater -- as Kessler won the 200 and 400 freestyle events while Ater won the 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke.

The following men also claimed at least one event victory:

  • Tony Goodwin (100 IM)
  • Evan Siberell (200 breaststroke)
  • Malik Nelson (100 freestyle)
  • Allan Gonzalez (200 fly)
  • Ian Montgomery (100 breaststroke)
  • Alex Ray (100 backstroke)

Along with Ater, Josiah Ramdeen placed second in the 200 backstroke, while Tony Goodwin and Luke Lunsford made it a 1-2-3 in the 50 free behind Ater's winning mark and also went 1-2-3 in the 100 free as Bower and Montgomery finished in lock step with Nelson.

In the 100 individual medley, the Shawnee State men completely dominated -- with each of the top eight spots being filled by Bears. Behind Goodwin, Siberell, Ray, Ramdeen, Lunsford, Bower, Montgomery and Rosado Lara finished in the second through eighth positions.

From a relay standpoint, Rosado Lara, Siberell, Bower and Green won the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay together.

Seniors

Overall, the seven-person senior class is well-accomplished.

Evan Bower and Evan Siberell are NAIA National Qualifiers, with Siberell having qualified in each of the last three seasons to close out his college career.

Eric Green, Emily Boggs and Siberell all participated in at least one additional sport on campus, with Green playing soccer, Siberell participating in outdoor track and field for a season and Boggs playing volleyball for a season as well. Green was a multi-time all-conference honoree as a goalkeeper for the Shawnee State men's soccer program.

Along with Bower and Siberell, Maggie Kayt Franks and Jose Enrique Rosado Lara are four-year members of the program. Franks has taken on a larger role in terms of coaching within the team, and aspires to pursue that passion in the future. Rosado Lara is married to former Shawnee State swimmer and former Shawnee State men's and women's swimming coach Kenzie Pennington.

All seven individuals also carry above a 3.4 GPA in the classroom.
