SSU M&W SWIM gears up for Mid-South Conference Championships

The men's and women's swimming programs at Shawnee State will look to add to an impressive list of NAIA National Qualifiers in its final tune-up prior to the 2025 NAIA Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships -- as the Bears will look to make one final push at the three-day Mid-South Conference Championships this Thursday through Saturday.

Shawnee State has enjoyed a diverse amount of success throughout the year, as the Bears have produced seven NAIA National Qualifiers, including:

  • Abigail Bosler (50 free, 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke)
  • Evan Bower (100 fly)
  • Tony Goodwin (50 free, 100 free, 200 free)
  • De-Nicha Lewis (50 free, 100 free)
  • Katie McCafferty (200 back, 400 individual medley, 1650 free)
  • Malik Nelson (50 free)
  • Evan Siberell (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke)

Bosler started the Bears off in an excellent manner by setting a national standard time in the 100 breaststroke at the Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy at Lindsey Wilson on Sept. 29, then set national standard marks in the 50 free and the 200 breaststroke at the Union Commonwealth Tri-Meet on Oct. 20.

Shawnee State then excelled in a big way at the four-day Bulldog Invite -- as Goodwin, Bosler and Lewis all posted NAIA National cuts in the 50 freestyle, while Bosler (100 breaststroke), McCafferty (400 yard individual medley), Bower (100 fly), Goodwin (200 free) and Siberell (100 breaststroke) added in five NAIA National Standards on the third day of the Bulldog Invite between them alone. The Bears then upgraded that to six NAIA National Standard times on the final day of the event as Goodwin (100 freestyle), Siberell (200 breaststroke), Bosler (200 breaststroke), Lewis (100 free) and McCafferty (200 back, 1650 free) added to a terrific showing in November.

Team-wise, the men's and women's swimming programs at Shawnee State have won three meets apiece -- defeating Pikeville in two separate dual meets and taking a tri-meet against UPike and Midway over the course of the season. In the tri-meet victory over Midway and Pikeville, newcomer Malik Nelson added the most recent NAIA National Standard back on Jan. 18, setting a NAIA cut in the 50 freestyle to give Shawnee State four NAIA National Qualifiers in the 50 free (Bosler, Goodwin, Lewis, Nelson) between the Shawnee State men's and women's swimming programs.
