SSU BB posts four big flies; scores 27 runs on 26 hits in doubleheader sweep of Aquinas, Mich. (14-3, 13-5)

XENIA, Ohio -- As a team, the Shawnee State baseball program is hitting .323 for the 2025 season -- and has a team .OPS of .960.

When one sees Shawnee State's box scores from Sunday afternoon's doubleheader against Aquinas (Mich.), it would be easy to see why.

Rob Ehlers' group ultimately obtained 27 runs on 26 hits in the nonconference doubleheader, get four home runs -- one each from Wyatt Haupt, Jace Parnin, Mason Reid and Ryan Scott -- and never trailed at any point as Shawnee State made easy work of Aquinas, 14-3 and 13-5, Sunday at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex in Xenia.

Game 1

After Jace Parnin scored early on a wild pitch to give Shawnee State a 1-0 lead to begin the contest, Aquinas (Mich.) answered back with a run off of an RBI single to knot the contest up at a 1-1 score after the opening inning of competition.

However, that tie proved to be as close as Aquinas would get to sniffing the lead.

In the second inning of work, a leadoff single by Hunter Warner and a walk by Wyatt Haupt immediately put runners on first and second base with nobody out, and after a sacrifice bunt by Zach Gaspar that put Warner on third and Haupt on second, a hit batter loaded the bases with one away.

From there, the Bears proceeded to jump all over the Saints -- as a walk by Tyler Lund was followed by an RBI single to right field by Nolan Tressler and a rare two-RBI sacrifice fly by Jace Parnin -- moving Shawnee State's lead up to a 5-1 margin after two innings of work.

Shawnee State then added on further in the third frame, as after a hit batter, an RBI double to left by Warner scored Mason Reid -- then Ryan Scott, who came up three batters later, scored Warner with an RBI base knock to put the Bears' lead to a 7-1 count.

Aquinas cut into the gap slightly with a run in the fourth frame to cut SSU's lead to a 7-2 mark, but the Bears responded with seven runs between the fifth and sixth frames to build an insurmountable lead.

A double by Haupt, two errors and an RBI single by Nolan Tressler gave Shawnee State a 9-2 count after five innings of work -- and in the sixth, the Bears absolutely pounded the Saints as a single by Diego Mendoza was followed by a two-run bomb by Reid -- then Haupt followed with his own homer, the freshman's being of a solo variety, two batters later. Then, after a double by Gaspar, Scott kept the theme of the sixth inning going as the infielder went yard two batters later with a two-run shot of his own to close out the scoring in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.

For the contest, Haupt (2-for-3, home run, double, walk, RBI, three runs scored), Scott (2-for-3, home run, three RBI, two runs scored), Reid (2-for-4, home run, two RBI, two runs scored), Warner (2-for-4, double, RBI, two runs scored) and Tressler (2-for-5, two RBI) all enjoyed multi-hit outings, while Parnin (1-for-3, sacrifice fly, two RBI, run scored), Gaspar (1-for-3, double, two runs scored) and Mendoza (1-for-4) rounded out the hit column for Shawnee State.

Game 2

Shawnee State wasted no time putting up a crooked number again in Game 2 -- as the Bears got a leadoff single by Nolan Tressler and worked two-out magic to produce from there as after two strikeouts, Hunter Warner and Wyatt Haupt came up large with Warner's two-out RBI single to right field and Haupt's two-RBI double to center field putting SSU up by a 3-0 margin.

Aquinas worked their way back into the contest by scoring four of the game's next five runs to tie the score at four runs apiece heading into the bottom of the third frame, but at that juncture, Shawnee State took full control of the second game, as well -- as the Bears scored four runs in the third to take the lead for good in the contest.

Following a leadoff double by Haupt, back-to-back singles by Ryan Scott and Tyler Lund resulted in an RBI single for Lund, and after a groundout, Jace Parnin came up large as the junior cranked a three-run blast to left to turn the four-all tie into an 8-4 Shawnee State lead after three innings complete.

From that juncture on forward, the Bears added on again -- as in the fourth, a hit by pitch and two walks loaded the bases for Lund, who proceeded to clear the bags with his three-RBI double to left center field to push Shawnee State's lead to an 11-4 margin and open the scoring up. The Bears then completed the scoring in the sixth -- as a single by Haupt and a walk by Ryan Scott allowed Lund and Tressler to notch back-to-back RBI singles to left and right field, respectively, to close out the Shawnee State scoring.

In Game 2 alone, Shawnee State scored 11 of its 13 runs with two men gone in the frame -- as the Bears delivered in clutch situations behind the batting of Haupt (3-for-4, two doubles, two RBI, two runs scored), Lund (3-for-5, double, five RBI, run scored), Tressler (3-for-5, RBI, two runs scored) and Parnin (1-for-4, home run, three RBI, two runs scored). Warner (1-for-2, walk, RBI, two runs scored), Scott (1-for-4, run scored) and Diego Mendoza (1-for-4, double, RBI) also joined the hit column to help complete the sweep.
