SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate unit for the Shawnee State Esports program competed at Riptide 2024, which competed from Friday, Sept. 6 to Sunday, Sept. 8 in a three-day event that saw the Bears go 2-3 against the best competition in the country in pool play, and earn a Silver Bracket Berth -- where Shawnee State ultimately finished as the Silver Bracket Runner-Up to Ohio State in the event, which was held at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio.

In Five-Round Swiss play, Shawnee State claimed victories over Baldwin Wallace (12-6) and Carnegie Mellon, Pa. (12-8), while also posting narrow defeats to Manchester, Ind. (12-9) and Stony Brook, N.Y. (12-10). The Bears claimed 47 stocks overall as a group.

After going 2-3 in Five-Round Swiss, Shawnee State was slotted in the Silver Bracket, where the Bears defeated Kansas and Purdue-Fort Wayne to reach the Silver Bracket Championship before falling to Ohio State.

Individually, Chris Mowery's 129th place showing in the 1,024-player field in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate led the way. Mowery went 4-2 overall in his six games.

Additional Esports talents competing in the event included Sam Patterson, Dustin Simpkins, Michael Clark, Simon Rhodes, Josh Addy, Chloe Compton and Hendrix Myers. Ben Moushey and Desmond Craft also participated at Riptide 2024 as SSU alumni who entered in the event as individuals.
