SSU Super Smash Bros. defeats Ashland; SSU RL defeats Houston-Downtown; SSU LoL, Overwatch fall to Lesley (Mass.), George Mason, Indiana Tech

The Super Smash Bros., League of Legends and Overwatch units at Shawnee State officially started play for the 2024-25 Esports season this week -- with Super Smash Bros. claiming a big 2-1 victory over in-state foe Ashland Thursday evening and the League of Legends and Overwatch units dropping competitive contests to Lesley (Mass.) and George Mason Wednesday evening.

Friday, Sept. 13 results

NACE Rocket League -- Shawnee State 3, University of Houston-Downtown 0 (10-0, 4-0, 4-1)

In a Rocket League contest that was held Friday evening, the Shawnee State Rocket League squad blasted the University of Houston-Downtown with relative ease as the Bears claimed a smooth 3-0 victory.

Sean Downard (Gamertag: Tacostash84) collected 10 goals and six assists between all three games, notching a fantastic 2,468-point total between the three-game sweep. In Game 1 alone, Downard collected 1,168 points, scoring an incredible six goals on eight shot attempts while nabbing three assists.

Blade Taylor (Gamertag: GZ SlaYeR) posted a well-balanced effort of his own, notching four goals, five assists and four saves in the three-game affair while tallying 1,375 points, while Dyllan DeBruyne (Gamertag: Duckworth) nabbed 601 points in his lone game in the 10-0 Game 1 victory, tallying strong numbers of his own with two goals, three assists, a save and 601 points on his own.

Tanis Caltrider (Gamertag: Spooki), a multi-sport athlete who also plays as a goalkeeper for the men's soccer program, nabbed 636 points after replacing DeBruyne in an effort to give each of Shawnee State's main rotation of Rocket League players game action. Caltrider tallied two goals, two assists and a save in his time playing on Friday.

GLEC League of Legends -- Indiana Tech 2, Shawnee State 0

In an Overwatch matchup that was held Friday evening, Shawnee State dropped a 2-0 decision to Indiana Tech. Shawnee State posted 41,372 damage points as a group against the Warriors in Game 1, however, to make Indiana Tech sweat out a victory in Game 1.

Thursday, Sept. 12 results

NACE Super Smash Bros. -- Shawnee State 2, Ashland 1

In a thrilling battle between two in-state competitors, the Shawnee State Super Smash Bros. unit defeated Ashland, 2-1, in a contest that was held Thursday evening.

Behind the quartet of Simon Rhodes (Gamertag: BIRD_), Chris Mowery (Gamertag: SPACEMINER), Sam Patterson (Gamertag: SAMAREX) and Michael Clark (Gamertag: SMOOGLEGAD), Shawnee State took 12 stocks in the first and third games to claim victory.

Between all three games, Mowery collected 12 stocks to lead Shawnee State, while Rhodes and Clark nabbed eight stocks each and Patterson seven to lead a well-balanced effort.

One of the best Super Smash Bros. players in the country, Mowery took five stocks in the second set and four stocks in the third set to help lead the Bears. Rhodes took four stocks each in the first and second sets while Clark nabbed seven of his eight stocks in the second and third sets -- including the final stock victory to seal the match in favor of Shawnee State. Patterson's four stocks in the first set helped get the match started off in a positive direction for the Bears.

Tuesday, Sept. 10 results

NACE League of Legends -- Lesley (Mass.) 3, Shawnee State 0

In League of Legends action, Shawnee State dropped a 3-0 decision to Lesley (Mass.) Wednesday evening. Shawnee State did, however, make Lesley sweat on the second map -- a scant 3-2 loss to Lesley in King's Row.

On that map, the Bears teamed up to post 47,065 damage points against the Lynx.

NACE Overwatch -- George Mason 2, Shawnee State 0

In Overwatch competition, Shawnee State fell by a 2-0 margin -- but made George Mason work for the victory as the Bears tallied 111,477 damage points in the match.
