
Bears drop in-state nonconference bout to Cougars, 108-74
The men's basketball program at Shawnee State closed a fast-paced nonconference contest against Mount Vernon Nazarene to within a 37-30 count with just over three minutes to play in the opening half, but couldn't claim victory as the Bears dropped a 108-74 decision to the Cougars Saturday afternoon.
For the contest, Shawnee State was rock solid from a shooting standpoint as the Bears went 26-for-56 from the floor and 5-for-12 from beyond the arc -- accuracy rates that amounted to 46.4 percent and 41.7 percent, respectively. However, Mount Vernon Nazarene's quick ball movement around the perimeter allowed the Cougars to shoot 58.1 percent from the field and 43.3 percent from three-point range. SSU also committed 15 turnovers in the contest to just eight assists, while MVNU posted 25 assists to just seven turnovers.
Harris keeps up pace of play
In another impressive outing, Shawnee State sophomore guard Chaze Harris posted yet another efficient performance from a scoring standpoint.
With the Bears behind by a 24-16 margin with 10:15 to play in the first half, Harris responded by scoring 10 of his 19 points from the 9:08 to 5:13 marks of the opening half of play to help the Bears keep the game close.
Harris ultimately finished with 19 points and five rebounds in just 19 minutes of game action, fouling out with over 16 minutes remaining in the second half of competition.

EJ Hubbert and Tre Beard posted strong second halves from a scoring standpoint as Hubbert (12 points, three rebounds, 6-for-10 shooting) and Beard (10 points, 2-for-3 three-point shooting, 4-for-4 free throw shooting) combined to score 22 bench points for the Bears, while Tyreke Johnson scored seven of his 10 points in the first half to join Harris, Hubbert and Beard in double-figures.
Shawnee State (7-5) returns to River States Conference action Thursday, Jan. 4 and Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024 when the Bears face Indiana-Southeast at 7:30 p.m. and Midway (Ky.) at 3 p.m. on those dates, respectively.
