SSU MBB to host Ohio Christian for Senior Day

The men's basketball program at Shawnee State will honor three seniors of its own to cap off Senior Day as Shawnee State guards John Dawson and Tre Beard, along with Shawnee State forward Keith Germain, will be honored when the Bears (17-7, 11-3 River States Conference) take on Ohio Christian (12-13, 7-7 RSC) Saturday afternoon in a tipoff that is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Waller Gymnasium. More will be coming on each of the three mentioned players following Saturday's contest.

All three seniors who are being honored sit inside the top-five overall in scoring, with Germain, a 6-5 forward, averaging 17.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks on 61.2 percent shooting and Beard, a 5-10 guard, posting 10.4 points on 47.1 percent shooting and a 47.3 percent mark from three-point range. Dawson is averaging six points per contest.

Germain has appeared in every game this season and started 19 of the 24 contests, Beard has started 11 out of the 23 contests that he's played in, and Dawson has also appeared in 23 contests while starting five games.

Previewing Ohio Christian

  • Three individuals are averaging in double-figures for Ohio Christian, including 6-4 grad student Levi Seiler (17.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.7 steals, 43.5 percent shooting, 38 percent three-point shooting), 5-9 junior guard Jimmy Salamone (13.6 points) and 6-3 senior guard Titus Burns (11.8 points, 49.1 percent shooting).
  • Ohio Christian has won eight out of its last 10 games after starting the season 4-11. Their two losses were to Point Park (Pa.) and West Virginia Tech by three points apiece.

Reviewing Shawnee State

  • In addition to Beard and Germain, 6-5 junior wing Chaze Harris (20.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 2.6 steals, 1.1 blocks, 59.7 percent shooting) and 6-6 junior guard Tyreke Johnson (15.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, one steal, 47.9 percent shooting) are also averaging in double-figures.
  • Harris, who was making his first official appearance in a Shawnee State uniform back when the Bears played Ohio Christian, went off by going for 33 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals on 12-of-13 shooting.
  • Beard (14 points, 4-of-4 from three-point range), Johnson (13 points, seven rebounds) and Germain (nine points, seven rebounds) assisted Harris in the Bears' 81-65 triumph over the Trailblazers.
  • Shawnee State's offensive efficiency continues to hold steady as the Bears are shooting 51 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point range. Those marks are both second in the River States Conference, and are 11th and 12th on a national scale across the NAIA realm.
