SSU MBB plays host to Indiana-South Bend in rematch of one-point road victory for Bears in 2023
The men's basketball program at Shawnee State will have a big nonconference matchup in front of it this coming Saturday, as the Bears (2-2) take on a highly-competitive basketball program in Indiana-South Bend (2-3) in a home contest that will be held Saturday, Nov. 16 at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth with a tip off time of 1 p.m.
Previewing Indiana-East
Indiana-East is led by the following:
- 6-10 junior forward Nick Mullen (13.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.2 blocks, one steal, 71.8 percent shooting, 55.6 percent three-point shooting)
- 6-6 senior wing Jylen Petty (13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 44 percent shooting, 50 percent three-point shooting)
- 6-0 senior guard Quentez Columbus (9.4 points, 5.4 assists, 1.4 steals)
- 6-6 sophomore forward Kyle Olagbegi (8.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 56.3 percent shooting)
- 6-7 senior forward Shawn Brown (6.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 50 percent shooting, 81.8 percent free throw shooting)
Prior to this season, longtime Indiana-South Bend head coach Scott Cooper, who is also the athletic director for Indiana South-Bend, has gone 102-34 overall over the past five years. The Titans made the NAIA National Tournament in four out of those five seasons.
Reviewing Shawnee State
Shawnee State is led by the following:
- 5-10 senior guard Tre Beard (20.5 points, four rebounds, 3.3 assists, two steals, 55.3 percent shooting, 46.4 percent three-point shooting, 85 percent free throw shooting)
- 6-9 sophomore forward Donovan Lovelace (16.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 60 percent shooting, 75.8 percent free throw shooting)
- 6-5 junior wing Markell Hood (16 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 55.1 percent shooting, 40 percent three-point shooting)
- 6-0 junior guard Marcos Vazquez (11.3 points, six assists, 5.8 rebounds, 1.5 steals)
- 6-5 senior forward AJ Belton (eight points, three rebounds, two assists, 1.7 steals, 68.8 percent shooting)
Beard played a team-high 33 minutes and posted 13 points, five rebounds and four assists to no turnovers while Elkin Ramirez, another key returnee, added in nine points, three assists and two rebounds to just one turnover in Shawnee State's thrilling 73-72 come-from-behind victory over Indiana-South Bend.
The Bears were down 72-67 with less than 30 seconds to play, but Ramirez's three-point bucket with 22 seconds left and a missed one-and-one attempt by the Titans set up Beard's game-winning three-pointer in front of the Shawnee State bench with three seconds to go as the Bears won by one point in what turned out to be a crucial victory toward SSU's NAIA National Tournament hopes last season. The duo combined to go 8-of-17 from the field and 6-of-14 from three-point range in last season's victory on Nov. 18.
