SSU MBB drops 93-72 decision to Rio Grande

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The men's basketball program at Shawnee State got 24 points from Tre Beard, but the Bears dropped a 93-72 decision to the Rio Grande RedStorm men's basketball program Saturday afternoon in a River States Conference matchup that was held at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth.

Shawnee State got another strong effort from Beard, who put up his 24 tallies on an efficient 8-of-14 from the field -- scoring 15 in the opening half of play. The senior also went 4-of-7 from the three-point arc, 4-of-5 from the free throw line and led Shawnee State with two assists and two steals while adding in three rebounds to boot.

For his career, Beard now sits at 951 points -- just 49 away from the 1,000-point barrier.

AJ Belton went a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor en route to a 10-point outing while Ezra McKee added 10 points, six rebounds, one steal and one block for SSU.

Amaury Hawes led the bench scoring with eight points -- all coming in the second half as the 6-1 freshman from Dayton was impressive, going 2-of-2 from the field, 4-of-5 from the free throw line and adding in a steal.

Shawnee State (5-9, 0-2 River States Conference) is scheduled to return to action when the Bears face Indiana-East (7-7, 1-1 River States Conference) Tuesday evening. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. at Lingle Court in Richmond, Ind.
