Beard collects first career River States Conference Offensive Player of the Week Award
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- There's no doubt about it -- Shawnee State graduate student guard Tre Beard is an offensive dynamo, and has proven himself as one of the most efficient scoring guards across the national realm.
The Chillicothe native, who averaged 28 points, four rebounds and a steal on 45.5 percent shooting from the field, used two gritty performances -- which resulted in two victories over Rio Grande (W 80-76, 2OT) and Indiana-East (W 78-74) -- to claim his first career River States Conference Offensive Player of the Week Award, as announced by River States Conference officials Monday afternoon. In the Bears' 80-76 double-overtime victory over the RedStorm, Beard scored 17 of his career-high 38 points in the two overtime periods and 30 of his 38 points, total, between the second half and both overtime sessions to will SSU to the win. Beard ultimately scored the first eight points of the second overtime, ultimately amassing 68 percent of Shawnee State's points in the two five-minute extra sessions to post the most points in a single game by any SSU player since Dakstats records begin being kept with the 2003-04 season.
Against Indiana-East, Beard added in a team-high 18 points as SSU never trailed in a 78-74 victory over the Red Wolves on Senior Day. The Chillicothe, Ohio product scored or assisted on SSU's first four points to begin the second stanza and followed that up by notching 10 of Shawnee State's 20 points over a span of 11:49 -- including two free throws with 22 seconds left that helped seal the victory.
Beard moved to 1,187 points for his Shawnee State career -- and now sits just 14 points away from reaching the top-10, all time, in program history in career points.
In addition to his career point total at SSU, Beard sits as the Shawnee State men's basketball program's:
