SSU men's bowling squad notches impressive fifth on first day of Raider Classic

In knocking down 4,961 pins in all, the Shawnee State men's bowling squad posted an impressive fifth place finish out of 20 teams following the first day of the two-day Raider Classic, which was held at the Beaver-Vu Bowling Lanes in Beavercreek, Ohio Saturday.

By notching its score, Shawnee State bettered units such as Ohio State, Toledo, Akron, Cincinnati, and Miami (Ohio) on the opening day of competition -- all by no less than 217 pins. The Bears also far bettered Rio Grande's mark of 4,777 pins and also bested in-state competitors in Notre Dame College, Ohio Northern, and Tiffin.

Shawnee State also posted a better score than former Mid-South Conference foe Thomas More (Ky.), who is now at the NCAA Division II level -- as the Saints garnered 4,887 pins.

By virtue of notching its 4,961-pin count, Bryan Sturgell's group was one of only six teams in the entire field to knock down at least 4,900 pins. Only traditional powerhouses Marian, Ind. (5,281), host Wright State (5,158), Robert Morris, Pa. (5,115) and Northwestern Ohio (5,072) bettered the Bears' Day One count.

Shawnee State is currently competing in the second day of the Raider Classic -- where the men have qualified for match play. Further updates will come later today.
