SSU men 14th after opening day of ITC Sectional Qualifier
The men's bowling program at Shawnee State used a terrific close to its 32 Baker game set to rise up to 14th place overall following the opening day of competition at the Intercollegiate Team Championships Sectional Qualifier that was held in Smyrna, Tenn. Saturday evening.
Shawnee State, who finished 14th of 18 teams in the field after the opening day of competition, knocked down 6,037 pins. The Bears bettered former Mid-South Conference foes Cumberland (Tenn.) and Cumberlands (Ky.) in addition to Vincennes (Ill.) and Ohio State.
From a team standpoint, the Bears were fourth in Game 1 (204), second in Game 5 (223), first in Game 10 (232), and fifth in Game 13 (200).
However, over the last four Baker games, Shawnee State ramped up their performance in a big way -- going big with a sectional-best 256 in Game 29 followed by another sectional-best 257 in Game 31.
With its 6,037 pins, the Bears sit just 541 pins off of the fourth place score of 6,578 pins that the unit in the fourth and final qualifying position, Savannah College of Art and Design at Savannah, currently has.
The top four units qualify for Intercollegiate Team Championship National competition, which would be held from Wednesday, April 17 through Saturday, April 20, 2024 in Jeffersontown, Ky.
