Nine men's bowlers named Academic All-OBC

In addition to the success of the Shawnee State women's bowling program, nearly 70 percent of the men's bowling program at Shawnee State was able to make an appearance on the Academic All-Ohio Bowling Conference list as Sam Clay, Ashton Heckman, Logan Hughes, Zach Ison, Blake Landers, Parker Lauders, Brendan Major, Andy Schoener and Jaylen Sumler all made a showing for Bryan Sturgell's squad in a list compiled by OBC officials.

Three of the nine representatives on the list all finished between GPAs of 3.76 to 3.86, as Parker Lauders, Blake Landers and Zach Ison all fell under that umbrella. Lauders, who has a 3.86 as a major in computer engineering technology, has earned over 95 hours of credit, while Landers has over 45 hours as a radiologic technology major who has a 3.83. Ison, who has earned 70 hours of academic credit, has a 3.76 GPA as a plastics engineering technology major.

Of the above three, Ison posted an average that was nearly 201 pins per rack, while Landers averaged 195 markers himself.

Four additional bowlers averaged between a 3.5 to a 3.68 GPA between them -- with Clay's 3.68 GPA in exercise science and over 100 credit hours leading the second group. Heckman's 3.62 in graphic design off of the back of over 80 credits, Schoener's 3.6 in computer aided drafting and design off of over 50 hours of credit, and and Sumler's 3.5 with over 45 hours of credit obtained as a sport management major helped put seven of the nine honorees above a 3.5 GPA.

Of the above, Clay averaged a school-record setting 206.7 pin average, while Sumler averaged 195 pulls and Schoener 192 ticks per rack on the lanes during the 2024-25 season.

Hughes, a multi-sport athlete who is a men's golfer in addition to being a men's bowler, currently has 3.4 GPA with over 75 hours of academic credit in business management, while Major, who has collected a 3.38 GPA with over 70 hours as a communications major, round out those leading the list.
