Ferrell matches lowest round by all competitors on Day 2 of UPike Spring Invite (71); makes All-Tournament Team for SSU men's golf
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. -- Shawnee State men's golfer Ross Ferrell has showcased flashes of brillance throughout his career on the links for the Bears.
Throughout different points during his junior season, Ferrell has proven to be more consistent on the links.
The work that the junior from Tipp City put in between the fall and spring portions of the schedule paid dividends Tuesday -- as Ferrell posted a one-over 71 to match the lowest Day 2 score by any player en route to a tie for third place overall and Pikeville Spring Invitational All-Tournament Team honors following the 36-hole tournament, which was held at StoneCrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, Ky.
Ferrell, who led Shawnee State's side with a ninth-place showing on Day 1, stepped up tremendously en route to lowering his overall stroke by eight on the second and final 18-hole round. The junior matched the second-best score on par 3s and par 5s for the tournament, tied for fourth in total birdies in the two-day event and finished tied for seventh in pars.
On Day 2 alone, Ferrell birdied the first and 17th holes while posting pars on 13 of the 16 remaining holes on the day en route to posting a two-day 150 -- just one stroke back of a runner-up finish in the tournament.
Behind Ferrell, Tanner Stevenson also enjoyed a stronger Day 2, moving up from his 15th place spot to 11th at the finish in the 32-golfer field. Stevenson, who posted a five-over 75 on Day 2, posted pars on 14 out of the 18 holes in his second round jaunt, aiding his four-position rise for the Wheelersburg product as Stevenson shot a two-day 156.
Trey Cracraft (13th) also scored a top-15 finish and showed flashes of brillance -- finishing even-par for the tournament on par 3s and par 5s, while Max Kearns, who played as an individual over the two-day event, claimed a top-20 finish by posting a 16th place effort.
Kyle Salamon (21st) and Logan Hughes (22nd) rounded out the finishing order for Shawnee State.
As a team, Shawnee State shot a 304 on Day 2 to maintain third place in the finishing order.
The men's golf program will be back in action Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6 when the Bears play in the Bill Blazer Memorial Match Play at Lancaster Country Club, which is being hosted by Ohio Dominican University.
