SSU MSOC set to face Mount Vernon Nazarene Saturday
After making the trip westward to face Campbellsville (Ky.) in its season opener, the men's soccer program at Shawnee State will head northward for its second game of the season as the Bears will face in-state foe Mount Vernon Nazarene Saturday evening at CH4 Stadium in Mount Vernon, Ohio in a nonconference matchup that kicks off at 7 p.m.
Previewing Shawnee State/Mount Vernon Nazarene men
Mount Vernon Nazarene, who will be playing in its season-opener Friday, returns the following:
- 5-8 senior midfielder Aaron Jolly (five goals, five assists)
- 5-11 senior forward/midfielder Zack Bowser (five goals, assist)
- 5-10 junior Daniel Martinez (four goals, assist)
- 5-3 senior Sam Hershey (two goals, three assists)
In its first game of the 2024 season, Shawnee State played Campbellsville, a 15-win unit from 2023, to a scoreless tie through the first 64 minutes of a nonconference bout before ultimately falling by a 3-0 margin.
- Senior Eric Green's six saves led the way defensively
- João Coqueti Léo, along with Guilherme Bitencourt, joined Green in playing the full 90 minutes of action Wednesday. Both players were critical in helping Green pitch a clean sheet in the first half and for over 20 minutes in the second half of competition, with Coqueti Léo making a dandy play in the 60th minute. When Green and Campbellsville forward Jarred Hendricks collided, Green fell down and Hendricks stayed upright, but as Hendricks launched an off-balance shot, Coqueti Léo stayed with the play, caught up to Hendricks' shot attempt and cleared the ball behind Green, keeping the contest scoreless.
- Théo Cavaleiro Trindade, Nikos Pontikis, Marco Riva, Sean Williams and Clement Akanyah each played over 70 minutes in the contest. Coqueti Léo, Cavaleiro Trindade and Williams were making their collegiate debuts.
