SSU drops 4-0 decision to (RV) Lindsey Wilson

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- In a nonconference matchup against (RV) Lindsey Wilson, the Shawnee State men's soccer program battled Lindsey Wilson over the opening half of play as the Bears held the Blue Raiders to one conversion -- a 23rd minute penalty kick by Lindsey Wilson's Sebastian Tregarthen -- en route to maintaining serve in a respectable 1-0 opening half deficit.

Lindsey Wilson, however, was able to collect three goals between the 69th and 72nd minutes of the second half, as the Bears ultimately dropped a 4-0 contest to the Blue Raiders Saturday evening at Shawnee Turf in Portsmouth.

Trailing by just an 8-3 margin in shots after the opening half of play, Shawnee State's only goal allowed through the first 68 minutes of competition came on a called foul just inside the penalty box as senior Eric Green appeared to make a clean dive at a ball as a Lindsey Wilson offensive player moved down the near side.

However, the play was ultimately ruled as a foul, and Tregarthen ultimately converted the ensuing penalty kick opportunity for his second goal of the year.

Other than that, Shawnee State's defensive play proved to be stout, as Nikos Pontikis, Guilherme Bitencourt, Sean Williams, and Lars van de Pol helped hold Lindsey Wilson to five shots on goal in the opening half of competition.

Ultimately, Lindsey Wilson simply converted its opportunities in the end, as Dominic Ayella scored to put the Blue Raiders up by a 2-0 count while Tregarthen and Jaland Larmond combined to assist one another on goals to finish the scoring.

Shawnee State (3-5-1) will have an opportunity to bounce back in a big way next Saturday, as the men's soccer program takes on Rio Grande at 7 p.m. at Evan E. Davis Field in Rio Grande, Ohio. The women's soccer contest between the Bears and the RedStorm precede the men's contest.
