
Balanced effort leads SSU men's swimming following first day of Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy
COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The men's swimming program at Shawnee State got strong efforts from several individuals, with Tony Goodwin, Evan Ater, Luke Lunsford, Thomas Kessler, Evan Siberell and Allan Gonzalez among those heading up the scoring for SSU following the first day of the Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy, which was held Friday evening at the Doris and Bob Holloway Health and Wellness Center in Columbia, Ky.
Goodwin, who competed in his first individual event as a Shawnee State men's swimmer in the 50 yard freestyle, scored the best individual finish for the Bears by nabbing an eighth-place finish -- swimming a 22.84 to come within a second of an NAIA Provisional time in the event.
Ater, who finished 10th, clicked off a 23.24 while Lunsford -- who claimed 12th -- nabbed a 23.88, giving Shawnee State 23 points from the 50 yard freestyle event alone.
In the men's 200 yard individual medley, Siberell's 2:14.03 led the senior to an 11th place finish and six points -- while Gonzales, who also competed in his first meet as a Shawnee State Bear, finished less than two-and-a-half seconds back of Siberell to finish in 15th, collecting two points himself.
Kessler, who swam in the men's 500 yard freestyle, handled the long-distance swimming event with respectability, notching a 5:28.01 to place 11th on the board in his first meet with SSU -- scoring six points in the event. Lunsford, who also competed in the 500 yard freestyle, added his second individual point-scoring placement, posting a 5:40.71 to finish 16th.
From a relay standpoint, Shawnee State had three groups score a combined 52 points between them -- as the men's 200 yard freestyle relay group of Ater, Goodwin, Lunsford and Josiah Ramdeen finished in seventh with a 1:33.37 while a second 200 yard freestyle relay group, consisting of Kessler, Evan Bower, Enrique Rosado Lara and Kami Walusimbi finished 12th, swimming a 1:37.87.
The men's 400 yard medley relay unit of Ater, Gonzalez, Lunsford and Rosado Lara closed out Shawnee State's efforts with a top-10 finish -- as the quartet swam a collective 4:01.02 to place ninth in the event.
Shawnee State will be back in action for the second and final day of the Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy. Action commences Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
