Goodwin sets NAIA 'B' cut in prelims in 50 free, breaks school record in 500 free to lead SSU men's swimming

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Tony Goodwin has proven to be an early standout throughout his collegiate career for Shawnee State.

If his results on the second day of the Bulldog Invite are any indication, Goodwin's going to be a standout at the highest of levels.

The freshman from St. Paul, Antigua clicked off a 21.87 in the preliminary round of the 50 yard freestyle to set a NAIA provisional 'B' cut, then continued his tear in the 500 yard freestyle by nabbing a school-record showing in that event as Goodwin nabbed a 4:56 to break the Shawnee State men's swimming school record in the event by more than five seconds in a terrific showing on the second day of the Bulldog Invite, which was held Thursday evening at the Union College Center for Health and Learning in Barbourville, Ky.

With his performances in individual events alone, Goodwin contributed 17 points on his own Thursday -- and broke the 500 yard freestyle school record by over four seconds with his performance in that event.

Additional performances by the Shawnee State men's swimming program are listed below:

  • Goodwin, along with Alex Ray, Evan Ater and Josiah Ramdeen, finished seventh in the 200 yard freestyle relay, nabbing 24 points
  • Thomas Kessler and Jose Enrique Rosado Lara added in 13th and 16th place finishes in the 500 yard freestyle relay themselves, adding in five points between them
  • Evan Siberell, Allan Gonzalez and Luke Lunsford finished 12th, 14th and 16th in the 200 yard individual medley, scoring nine points combined
  • Ramdeen and Ater finished 14th and 15th in the 50 yard freestyle, contributing 5 points between them in that event
  • Ater, Ramdeen, Siberell and Evan Bower (sixth) and Gonzalez, Lunsford, Ray and Kami Walusimbi (10th) finished off the Day 2 efforts with 40 points combined

Shawnee State will be back in action for the third day of the four-day Bulldog Invite Friday.
