Nelson, Siberell add in one cut apiece in 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke respectively; SSU men finish third at Mid-South Conference Championships
DANVILLE, Ky. -- The men's swimming program at Shawnee State received two NAIA Provisional Cut times between Malik Nelson's mark in the 100 yard freestyle and Evan Siberell's nod in the 200 yard breaststroke -- rounding out a strong weekend for the Shawnee State men's swimming unit as the Bears claimed a third place finish at the three-day Mid-South Conference Championships Saturday evening at Boles Natatorium in Danville, Ky.
The Bears, who scored 349.5 points, outpointed NAIA National powerhouse Indiana Wesleyan as well as Campbellsville (Ky.) and Midway (Ky.) thanks in large part to the efforts of Nelson and Siberell, who combined for five NAIA Provisional Cuts over a three-day period.
Nelson, who swam a fast time of 46.76, was one of nine Mid-South Conference swimmers to set a NAIA Provisional Cut in the event. The talented swimmer finished sixth in the finals of the 100 yard freestyle -- swimming over seven-tenths of a second faster in the finals from his preliminary time.
Siberell, who was one of 12 individuals to collect a NAIA Provisional Cut in the 200 yard breaststroke, collected a sixth-place finish in the event, notching a 2:06.54 in the finals to post a time that was nearly two seconds faster than his prelim mark.
In addition to the pair's efforts, Tony Goodwin, Alex Ray, Josiah Ramdeen and Malik Nelson finished fourth in the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:14.67).
Shawnee State men's swimming coach Tricia Boggs, who also is the head coach of the women's swimming program, was named as the Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year. More will be coming on Boggs in a story later today.
