Bears Win Series Against Lions

Bears Win Series Against Lions

The Shawnee State Softball team welcomed in Mid-South Conference foe Freed-Hardeman University earlier this week. Playing a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, the two teams split, but SSU would get the last laugh as they would win the rubber match and collect the series win.

In game one, Carly King went five innings allowing four hits while striking out four and allowing just one run. Emma Wargel came in to complete the final two innings of the contest not allowing a hit and allowing one earned run. The Bears would score all six of their runs in the first two innings of the contest. A Lauren Spears sacrifice fly scored one in the first. In the second the Bears would score five runs, Lexie Lockwood singled, scoring Haley Hawes followed by a Brittani Wolfenbarker double scoring Lockwood and Kylie Ray. Emily Allphin singled in the same inning, scoring Lockwood and Wolfenbarker. The Bears would be up 6-0 after two and would hold onto winning the contest 6-3.

The Bears in game two would fall behind early as the Lions had Junior pitcher Cassie Schaefer figured out earlier. Offensively for SSU, they struggled to get runners on but one of the two Bears runs was off a single by Mackenzie Hale, and the other run came off a Freedhardman error scoring the only other run the Bears would have in the contest. The Bears would lose 11-2.

Emma Wargel was in the circle for game three and went seven innings striking out six and allowing just two earned runs. In the bottom of the first, Emily Allphin singled to left scoring Brittani Wolfenbarker, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead going into the second inning.  Shawnee scored in the second off a passed ball to take a 2-0 lead. Freed would answer with two of their own in the third, tying the game at two a piece. Ashley Fite would step to the plate in the fifth hitting a ground ball to the right side of the field which scored Lexie Lockwood giving the Bears the 3-2 lead. Shawnee State held that lead for the remaining two innings of play giving them not only the game win, but the series win as well.

The Bears will be back in action Thursday afternoon as they match up against the Tigers of Georgetown College. The Softball team will celebrate their Seniors in between the two games so come out and support the Bears. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 PM at Doc Singleton Park.
