SSU SB splits with Ohio Christian (8-0 L, 6-2 W)
The softball program at Shawnee State overcame an 8-0 setback in its opener against the Ohio Christian softball program by bouncing back to notch a 6-2 victory over the Trailblazers, with the Bears officially recording their 25th win of the 2024 season in doing so.
Shawnee State, who sits at 25-7 overall and 15-7 inside the River States Conference, jumped out early in Game 2 with a three-run total as an error and a single by Lauren Spears allowed Sierra Dunnagan to drive in Jenna Christopher with the first run in Game 2. Spears then scored on a passed ball while an error allowed Dunnagan to blitz home plate, giving SSU a 3-0 advantage after an inning of work.
The Bears, who added another run in the second frame after a walk, a passed ball and an error allowed Cassie Berry to score, settled in -- and relied on the pitching of Amariah Hoerner for much of the remaining distance. Hoerner, who threw a complete game three-hitter in Game 2, struck out 10 batters and walked only two for a five-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Ohio Christian closed to within a 4-2 count on a single and a wild pitch in the fourth inning, but Hoerner allowed no blemishes outside of the fourth frame and faced just one batter above the minimum between the second and third innings as well as the fifth through seventh frames of action.
In the top of the seventh inning, SSU got both runs back as back-to-back two-out doubles by Spears and Dunnagan resulted in Spears scoring one run, while Genavie Espinoza drove in Dunnagan with an RBI single to account for the additional run to complete the scoring.
