Hawthorne on a heater
Throughout her time inside the women's basketball program, Shawnee State junior forward Lauren Hawthorne has filled the role of a microwave scoring option off of the bench quite nicely.
That's especially been the case lately -- as Hawthorne has shot no worse than 45.5 percent from the field in each of her last 10 contests and has shot 50 percent or better from three-point range in eight out of her last nine games.
In a team-high 25 minutes Tuesday evening, Hawthorne was again on point as the 6-0 junior forward from Hebron, Ky. shredded the Alice Lloyd defense by posting 19 points and eight rebounds on 7-of-15 shooting from the field -- including 11 points and six rebounds in the second half alone.
For the season, Hawthorne is averaging 7.7 points off of the bench -- a team-best -- while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 41.1 percent from three-point range. Hawthorne is also averaging 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game in 19.5 minutes per contest.
CG with another dub-dub
The common theme of Cianna Gloster finding a way to obtain double-doubles continued Tuesday evening as Gloster enjoyed another banner evening.
Gloster, a 6-0 senior forward from Flint, Mich., needed just 19 minutes to go 8-of-11 from the field for her 16 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds, two steals and a block to boot. Gloster posted 12 points, six rebounds, both of her steals and the lone block in the opening half of action alone while shooting 6-of-8 from the field.
Gloster is now averaging 12.7 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.7 steals for the 2024-25 season while shooting 52.6 percent for the year as well.
Deaver adds her own heater
Playing excellent basketball in the second quarter of play, Shawnee State sophomore guard Lexi Deaver added a jolt for the Bears in the second quarter with her shooting from outside.
In the massive 27-5 second quarter spurt that the Bears put together, Deaver added in eight of her 10 tallies for the game in that quarter alone, knocking down back-to-back three-point attempts while going 2-of-2 from the free throw line to boot.
Additional
Jada Johnson joined Deaver with a nice scoring punch of her own by posting nine points on 3-of-5 shooting, while Laken Williams added in six points and three rebounds off of the bench as well. Jariah Steele posted six rebounds and five points, Miyoshi Ellis and Sanaya Gregory combined for seven assists, Gregory and Emily Maynard tallied up five steals together and Addison Edmondson and Jaden Tucker posted three and two points, respectively, helping Shawnee State's bench outscore Alice Lloyd's bench by a 49-19 margin.
The Bears will be back in action Thursday evening when Shawnee State takes on Cincinnati-Clermont in a home contest at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
