Top-10 showings by Martin, Wellman led SSU women's golf following first day of Muskingum Invitational
Throughout the spring, Shawnee State senior golfer Erika Martin and Shawnee State freshman talent Aly Wellman have simply continued to get better every time they've hit the links.
The duo continued to show their improvement throughout the first day of play Sunday -- as the duo's top-10 showings led the Shawnee State women's golf program at the Muskingum Invitational at EagleSticks Golf Club in Zanesville, Ohio.
Martin, who shot an opening round 82 to head the SSU contingent, placed in a tie for eighth overall after the opening day of action. She currently sits just five strokes back of fourth and only three back of a top-five showing with a round to go in the 25-golfer field.
Wellman shot an 85 to continue what has been a highly productive freshman season and sits 10th following the opening day of competition. The Wayne, W. Va. native, who is the reigning River States Conference Women's Golfer of the Week, joins Martin in improving from each round of the spring from the Ohio Christian Spring Invitational to the present time.
Wellman, who made up a nine-stroke deficit to win the Ohio Christian Spring Invitational by four strokes, sits just four strokes back of sixth place following the first day of action and is six strokes back of fifth place.
Alaina Collins posted a 19th place finish following the opening round while Cali Baird and Raevin Mitchell sit 23rd and 24th after the opening day's festivities.
Denison's Isabella Dolan, who finished 36th overall at the NCAA Division III National Championships last season, leads the field with her 71 heading into the final day of play, which begins Monday morning at EagleSticks Golf Club in Zanesville.
