Women’s Soccer Falls Against Third Ranked Cumberlands

The SSU women's Soccer team welcomed the nationally ranked Patriots from the University of Cumberlands this past Saturday. This was the Bear's last non-conference game of the season. The game ended 6-2 in favor of the Patriots.

From the beginning of the game, the Patriots showed that they are a team that likes to play to feet and with quick passes, and the Bears were ready for their high-pressure playing with five defenders in the backline. Even though the Bears were organized and tried to keep them away from their goal, Cumberlands found the back of the net in the seventh minute and the tenth minute of the game. The Bears found the netting shortly after Lucie Ashkettle crossed a beautiful ball for Brianna Brudy, who would take the shot and score. The Patriots scored once more, making the game 3-1 heading into halftime.

The Bears would come out to the second half looking to reduce goal difference. They found their second goal just four minutes after the start of the second half, coming from a corner, and after a couple of bounces off multiple players, Lucie Ashkettle finally put the ball past the keeper. The game would stay 3-2 for the next twenty minutes as both teams traded possession of the ball, trying to find more chances to score. The Patriots scored three more times over the last 18 minutes.

The Shawnee State Soccer will be back in action this Thursday, September 21st, as they open up River State Conference action at home against the Red Storm of the University of Rio Grande. The game starts at 6:00 P.M.
