SSU women’s soccer notches program record with nine named All-RSC talents
Throughout the course of her time at Shawnee State, SSU Director of Soccer Natasha Ademakinwa has worked to not only bring in the best talent possible but develop said talent at SSU.
The Shawnee State women's soccer program is certainly a prime example of Ademakinwa's persistence – as a program record nine players were named all-conference.
Shawnee State sophomore midfielder Brianna Brudy earned First-Team All-River States Conference accolades while eight additional talents, including SSU forwards Haynna Addy, Frederika Ntumba and Lucy Snyder, Bear midfielders Lucie Ashkettle and Madison Culp, SSU defenders Aurie Coriell and Claire Favre and standout goalkeeper Julie Derenemesnil, also obtained All-RSC honors according to conference officials in a press release put out Thursday.
First Team All-RSC (Brianna Brudy)
Brudy, who has been nothing short of tremendous since reaching Shawnee State's campus, notched her second consecutive all-conference campaign in as many seasons on the college pitch after a sophomore campaign which consisted of 10 goals and eight assists – both team-highs.
The Lakeland, Fla. native, who nabbed 14 goals and three assists a season ago en route to Second-Team All-Mid-South Conference honors, bumped herself up to First-Team All-River States Conference honors in Shawnee State's first women's soccer campaign as a full member of the RSC.
Already establishing herself as one of the best women's soccer players in the history of the program, Brudy's 25 career goals rank eighth all-time in the history of the Shawnee State women's soccer program while her 61 career points has Brudy ninth on the SSU career points list. SSU Hall of Famer Sarah Koehler (56 goals, 132 points) heads up both lists.
Second Team All-RSC (Haynna Addy, Aurie Coriell, Julie Derenemesnil, Claire Favre)
Beyond Brudy, the remaining RSC honorees certainly shined in a big way.
Addy, a native of nearby Chillicothe, added in a proficient campaign herself by notching 10 goals and an assist while posting the team's second-highest shooting percentage of players who shot more than 10 times at .270, while Derenemesnil, a Paris, France product, performed admirably in the box with 43 saves to just 16 goals allowed for a 1.55 goals-against-average, which sits fourth in a single season in school history.
Coriell, a Minford High School product, and Favre, a native of Besancon, France, each scored a pair of goals and helped contribute to four SSU shutouts as well as three additional contests where SSU allowed just a single goal during the 2023 season as defensive strongholds for the Bears, with Favre joining fellow teammate Hannah Sponsel as the lone players to play and start in all 19 contests during the regular season.
Honorable Mention All-RSC (Lucie Ashkettle, Madison Culp, Frederika Ntumba, Lucy Snyder)
In her first season at Shawnee State, Valley's Lucie Ashkettle showcased her promise with seven goals and four assists en route to a 18-point outing as a freshman, which was second on the roster only to Brudy. Culp and Snyder, who are two of seven Bears to appear in all 17 contests during the 2023 regular season – notched a goal and two assists apiece. Both Culp and Snyder are multi-year starters.
As for Ntumba, the sophomore, much like Brudy, is a shining star. In 15 games, Ntumba finished third on the SSU squad in goals, with seven, and has 12 goals and three assists in her career through two seasons of competition.
Additional
The program record nine players who earned all-conference honors surpasses the previous best of six that Shawnee State set in 2003. The SSU women's soccer program, which also had five players earn all-conference honors in 2001 and 2004, also put its most players ever on a first or second-team all-conference list with Brudy, Addy, Coriell, Derenemesnil and Favre.
Shawnee State ultimately went 6-3-1 in its first season inside the River States Conference, including a 3-0-1 mark at Shawnee Turf in RSC play.
The Bears finished the year 8-10-1 overall.
