Ipina Taylor's first half goal, Derenemesnil's nine saves huge for SSU in 1-1 tie with UC-Clermont
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- The women's soccer program at Shawnee State used a 29th minute first half goal by Carlota Ipina Taylor to take a 1-0 lead in the opening half of competition, then staved off a rally by 2023 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II National Champion Cincinnati-Clermont in the second half of competition behind a nine-save effort from Julye Derenemesnil to force a 1-1 tie in a road matchup that was held at Scudamore Field in Highland Heights, Ky. Friday evening.
Ipina Taylor uses boot for blast in 29th
Coming off of the bench in Friday evening's nonconference matchup, the play of Carlota Ipina Taylor in the opening half proved to be huge.
With space to launch a shot, the midfielder and defender put a beauty of a ball on the money from 20 yards away, with her left-footed rocket beating the outstretched arms of Cincinnati-Clermont's Jordan Geis to the left corner pocket to give SSU a 1-0 advantage.
The goal was Ipina Taylor's first of 2024 -- and the sixth of her career -- as the senior gave Shawnee State a 1-0 halftime advantage with her 29th minute shot.
Derenemesnil dives way to nine saves
Facing a barrage of shots in the second half of competition, the Bears were ultimately outshot by the Cougars by an 11-2 margin in the second half of competition.
However, senior goalkeeper Julye Derenemesnil, outside of a 64th minute goal by Cincinnati-Clermont's Kaylee Rose, stood tall in goal.
UC-Clermont put seven of its 11 shots on frame in the second half of competition, but Derenemesnil's athleticism and overall activity helped Shawnee State stay in the fight as the senior ultimately made nine saves over the course of the contest to keep the match at a draw. Derenemesnil made five saves over the contest's final 16 minutes of competition to help preserve the tie.
