SSU drops 3-0 nonconference bout to Grace (Ind.)

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- In a nonconference contest against Grace (Ind.), the Shawnee State women's soccer program battled undefeated Grace (Ind.) to a scoreless 0-0 tie after 45 minutes of action, but three second-half goals by the Lancers forced the Bears to settle for a 3-0 setback in a respectable showing Wednesday evening at Shawnee Turf in Portsmouth.

Shawnee State's last line of defense -- in the form of Julye Derenemsnil -- was again stout over the course of the affair as Derenemsnil made five saves over the course of the opening half -- with four of those stops coming over the final 19 minutes of first half competition to keep the match at a scoreless 0-0 tie through the opening half of competition.

However, Grace, who put 12 of its 14 shots on frame in the affair -- was able to capitalize. Following a 57th minute own goal, Shawnee State remained in the fight -- but Tori Twombly scored for Grace in the 72nd minute and six minutes following Twombly's conversion, Ellie Greiser's goal off of a Rosalie Gefrorer pass rounded out the scoring.

Derenemsnil ultimately made seven stops of the 10 shots that were placed on frame by Grace, while freshman goalkeeper Harlee Brand stopped each of the two shots that the Adams County product saw late in the going.

The women's soccer program at Shawnee State gets back to action with a Saturday afternoon nonconference matchup against Mount Vernon Nazarene at Shawnee Turf. Game time is set for 2 p.m. as part of a doubleheader that sees the men's soccer program follow with its own nonconference contest against Michigan-Dearborn at 5 p.m.
