WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The women's soccer program at Shawnee State dropped a 6-0 decision at the hands of No. 1 Cumberlands (Ky.) Wednesday evening, with the Bears taking on the NAIA's top-ranked women's soccer unit at the UC Lacrosse and Soccer Complex in Williamsburg, Ky.
Despite being down three key starters due to injuries and losing a fourth during the contest due to an injury, Shawnee State played Cumberlands to a solid 3-0 first-half showing as the Bears' defensive backline, led by Isabella Riddle, Kya Edwards, Elizabeth Brown and Claire Favre, made finishing at the net difficult for the Patriots at different points in the opening half. Freshman Harlee Brand also made three saves in the opening 17 minutes of the contest to get out to a strong start in her first collegiate start.
Offensively, Haynna Addy's run in the 23rd minute and two shots on goal in the 39th and 82nd frames by Carlota Ipina Taylor represented SSU's best opportunity to strike in the nonconference matchup.
In all, nine Shawnee State players -- Brand, Brown, Riddle, Ipina Taylor, Edwards, Addy, Favre, Bianca Robinson and Madison Culp -- played all 90 minutes in the contest.
The Bears (0-5-1) will get a 10-day break before returning to action Saturday, Sept. 28 when Shawnee State opens up River States Conference action against archrival Rio Grande (3-4) at 5 p.m. in Rio Grande.
