SSU women's soccer falls to Rio Grande, 4-1
RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- In a River States Conference match that was played Saturday evening, the women's soccer program at Shawnee State fell to the Rio Grande women's soccer program, 4-1, in a River States Conference contest that was held at Evan E. Davis Field in Rio Grande.
In a match that was more competitive than what the final score indicated, Shawnee State held Rio Grande to a scant 1-0 advantage as outside of a Jitsuk De Mujink goal, the Bears kept the sheet clean over the remainder of the half.
Lucie Ashkettle nearly capitalized in the 22nd minute as her bending shot was saved by Alba Vilades Marin to save the equalizer. Just under 15 minutes later, Ashkettle's pressure, along with that of Haynna Addy, allowed Addy to get free following a Rio Grande goal kick for a prime opportunity -- but Vilades Marin saved that shot, as well -- keeping the score 1-0 in favor of the RedStorm at the half.
Addy and Ashkettle continued their pressure during the first 20 minutes of the second half -- with Addy's 48th minute touch just being saved by Vilades Martin and Ashkettle putting pressure on the Rio Grande defense with shots in the 55th and 62nd minutes of competition.
However, two goals by Rio Grande's Amora Albano in the 66th and 68th minutes of play off of passes gave the RedStorm a 3-0 lead.
Shawnee State played even again with Rio Grande from there, with Ashkettle ultimately scoring on a beautiful 88th minute goal from just inside the box on the near side of the pitch to set the final score.
For the contest, Ashkettle's five shots and three on goal -- including the 88th minute conversion -- led the Bears, while Addy placed both of her shots on goal. Annie Coriell placed her lone shot on frame while Elizabeth Brown also collected a shot opportunity for the Bears.
Shawnee State (0-6-1, 0-1 River States Conference) will return home Thursday, Oct. 3 to face Indiana-East (0-6-2, 0-0 River States Conference) in a RSC matchup that will be held at Shawnee Turf in Portsmouth.
