Bio

Joe McCauley, a Louisville, Ky. native who was a major contributor throughout much of his collegiate career as a goalkeeper at Louisville and has gone on to a successful coaching career that spans well over three decades, was named as the newest women's soccer head coach by Shawnee State Athletic Director Gerald Cadogan on Thursday, Aug. 8.

"First, I'd like to thank Gerald Cadogan for the opportunity to lead the women's soccer program at Shawnee State," McCauley said. "I'm very honored to be given this opportunity to guide the team and to continue its success, and build more future success as we move forward. I am excited to begin. The desire and drive to create a first-class program and team culture is the direction we want to head, and the energy seems to be in place to do so."

McCauley, who began playing soccer in the sixth grade, ultimately rose to become a star at Louisville DeSales High School, helping the Colts obtain a Kentucky High School State Athletic Association State Runner-Up finish in 1983 as part of a high school career that saw McCauley stay home after obtaining an opportunity to play at Louisville.

As a goalkeeper with the Cardinals, McCauley's career truly blossomed.

Playing under Claudio Maldonado, who served as Louisville's first men's soccer head coach from the inception of the program in 1979 to 1992, McCauley became the starting goalkeeper as an upperclassman and enjoyed strong seasons in both 1987 and 1988. Between the two campaigns, McCauley saved 189 shots, posted a goals-against-average of 2.06 as a junior followed by a 1.60 GAA mark as a senior, and helped the Cardinals improve from 4-15-3 after his sophomore season to a 10-10 overall record as a senior.

For his career at Louisville, McCauley sits fifth all-time in Louisville history in single-season saves and career saves and is 10th in program history in career shutouts, with nine.

While finishing his bachelor's degree up at Louisville, which he obtained in December 1990, McCauley served as a student assistant underneath Maldonado, and fine-tuned what would become his eventual passion in the process.

In 1993, McCauley got his first opportunity as a women's soccer head coach in his native Louisville -- this time at Bellarmine, who was competing at the NCAA Division II level at the time. In five seasons, McCauley led Bellarmine to a 10-7 overall record in 1995 and guided the Knights to their first Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Tournament appearance in 1996.

In 1998, McCauley headed up to the NCAA Division I level and made the move out of state in taking a NCAA Division I assistant coaching position at Northern Illinois, where he spent the next five seasons of his coaching career. McCauley helped guide NIU to a Mid-American Conference Championship in 1998 (14-7 overall and 9-1 in MAC play), and coached two academic all-americans in Anne Mucci and Megan Anderson.

McCauley then received an opportunity to return to the NCAA Division II level as a head coach at Eckerd (Fla.) College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he spent the next seven years. While there, McCauley coached two Sunshine State Conference selections in second-team recipient Johanna Wiborg and honorable mention talent Amy Lambert, with Wiborg also being named to the NSCAA's All-South Region Team.

Returning to the Midwestern United States in 2010, McCauley accepted an opportunity at Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2010, also returning to the Great Lakes Valley Conference in doing so. For the next 12 seasons, McCauley led Missouri S&T and proceeded to guide the Miners to the following accomplishments:
  • The program's three highest single-season conference win totals in program history (2010, 2014, 2021)
  • The first GLVC Tournament appearance in program history (2010)
  • A GLVC Tournament Championship Game appearance (2014)
  • A GLVC Tournament Semifinal appearance (2021)
  • A school-record in shutouts in a single-season (11, 2021)

In all, McCauley had seven players obtain all-conference honors, including three during the 2021 season alone -- where Sydney Gratz and Kristin Steins were named as First-Team All-GLVC honorees.

In 2022 and 2023, McCauley served as the assistant men's soccer coach at Bellarmine, who recently made the transition to the NCAA Division I level.

Competing in the Atlantic Sun Conference, McCauley helped Bellarmine finish 12-9-14 over the past two seasons. The Knights, with McCauley's assistance, notched:
  • Its first ASUN Tournament Semifinal appearance in 2022
  • A second-place finish in the ASUN regular season standings in 2023
  • Its first ASUN Tournament Championship Game appearance in 2023 (3-2 win over Stetson (Fla.) in conference semis, 1-0 loss to Lipscomb (Tenn.) in conference title game)

McCauley also used his goalkeeping expertise to mold Second-Team All-ASUN goalkeeper Matthew Brozovich in his two seasons at Bellarmine. Brozovich made 49 saves in 2022 and 48 saves in 2023, notched eight shutouts and posted goals-against-average marks of 1.04 and 1.32 during his final two years with the Knights.

Along with his above coaching accomplishments, McCauley earned a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) 'B' License in June 1996, followed by a USSF 'A' License the following June and a USSF Refreshed 'A' License in June 2009. McCauley has been a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America since 1994.
