Bosler, Lewis, McCafferty cap off excellent performance for Shawnee State swimming at Bulldog Invite with four national cuts between them on final day
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- In their work ethic both inside their swimming craft as well as outside of it, Abigail Bosler, De-Nicha Lewis and Katie McCafferty have been excellent representatives of the Shawnee State women's swimming program throughout their careers.
For all three swimmers, their work toward getting ready for the 2024-25 season all came together at the four-day Bulldog Invite -- and Day 4 saw all three talented individuals hit NAIA National cuts.
Bosler, who posted a 2:27.88 in the 200 yard breaststroke, set her third NAIA National Standard time over a three-day stretch with a 'B' cut, while Lewis posted her second NAIA National Standard time in three days with a 100 yard freestyle time of 54.89 to place sixth.
McCafferty, meanwhile, added in two NAIA National Standard times in the same day -- as her 2:15.17 in the 200 yard backstroke and a 1650 yard freestyle mark of 18:48.03 resulted in her third NAIA National Standard time of the weekend -- as the SSU women's swimming program posted eight NAIA National Standard cuts between the trio and a 312-point output at the competitive Bulldog Invite in Barbourville, Ky., which was loaded with NCAA Division II programs as well as competitive NAIA swimming foes in Union Commonwealth and West Virginia Tech.
In posting her time of 54.89 in the 100 yard freestyle, Lewis swam nearly a full second faster than her prelim time -- and was one of seven individuals in the 16-swimmer event to nab a B standard in another strong showing by the native of Trindad and Tobago. The junior accounted for 13 points on her own accord.
Competing in the aforementioned 200 yard breaststroke, Bosler again set a national standard in the breaststroke with a 2:27.88, finishing third as one of five swimmers in a 13-swimmer field to post a B cut.
McCafferty -- a versatile swimmer in multiple disciplines -- swam an 18:48.03 to finish in fifth place and collect 14 points in a jam-packed 1650 yard freestyle event that saw six of the 16 swimmers in that event collect a B cut. The sophomore from Centerville then added in 15 points and a second NAIA B Standard with a 2:15.17 in the 200 yard backstroke as one of four swimmers in a 10-member field to hit the mark.
Along with the efforts of the above trio, Shawnee State's women's swimming squad got 40 additional points through the following efforts:
- Bosler, McCafferty, Jordan Patterson and Emilie Wasnich finished fifth in the 400 yard freestyle relay, contributing 28 tallies
- Mercedes Mwebieha, along with Wasnich and Patterson, combined for 11 points in the 100 yard freestyle themselves, collecting 12th, 13th and 15th place finishes
- Emma Conley claimed the final point for Shawnee State on Day 4 in the 1650 freestyle.
