SSU women's tennis falls to NCAA D-I Lindenwood (Mo.), NAIA No. 9 William Woods (Mo.), Missouri Baptist

The women's tennis program at Shawnee State fell by 7-0 margins to NCAA Division I Lindenwood (Mo.), NAIA No. 8-ranked William Woods (Mo.) and Missouri Baptist by 7-0 margins Sunday and Monday evening to begin their spring break showings.

Highlights -- Lindenwood (Mo.)

Vanessa Akuaku and Lacey Urban represented Shawnee State well at the top two singles slots -- as Akauku fell by a scant 6-4, 6-4 margin to Lindenwood's Fabiana Labrador at No. 1 singles while Urban dropped a tight 6-1, 6-4 decision to Yana Gaskell at No. 2 singles.

Doubles competition saw the pairing of Lacey and Lexy Urban take two games from the top doubles pairing of Gaskell and Sarah Ben Aba before falling by a 6-2 margin.

Highlights -- No. 9 William Woods (Mo.)

Against William Woods, the No. 1 doubles pairing of Lacey and Lexy Urban fared well again, dropping a tight 6-4 decision to William Woods' No. 1 doubles pairing of Hanna Lindeboom and Marta Calvo Larraz. Lindeboom and Calvo Larraz are multi-time All-American Midwest Conference honorees in both singles and doubles play.

The No. 2 doubles unit of Kristina Dimitrijevic and Sophia Hausner also got a tough match from the No. 2 doubles pairing of Vanessa Akuaku and Antonia Ilea as Akuaku and Ilea lost by a scant 7-5 margin.

In singles play, Lacey Urban took William Woods' No. 2 singles talent, Mireia Simon Sanchez, to a 7-5 margin in the first set of games before dropping the second set, 6-1. Ilea and Lexy Urban also posted five game victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles before dropping their respective contests to Calvo Larraz (6-3, 6-2) and Dimitrijevic (6-2, 6-3).

Highlights -- Missouri Baptist

Against Missouri Baptist, the No. 2 doubles pairing of Vanessa Akuaku and Antonia Ilea took Missouri Baptist's No. 2 doubles pairing of Mariana Azevedo and Teodora Iacob to a close 6-4 contest before falling.

The women showcased their competitiveness against the 5-3 Spartans in singles:

  • Akauku dropping close 7-5, 6-2 contests to Camila Gomez at No. 1 singles
  • Lacey Urban taking the second set from Missouri Baptist's No. 2 singles talent in Luana Luerson, 6-4, before dropping tight matches by 7-5 and 6-2 margins
  • Lacey Urban, Brooklyn Foose and Claire Favre battled Nia Vasiljkovic, Mia McIssac and Mariana Azevedo to 6-4 contests at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles in the opening set with Foose taking McIssac to a 7-5 margin at No. 5 singles
