SSU women's tennis drops 6-1 decision to Indiana-East
The women's tennis program at Shawnee State put together a strong effort in a River States Conference contest that was held Saturday against Indiana-East, but the Bears fell by a 6-1 margin to the Red Wolves in its River States Conference opener, which was held at the Daehler Tennis Courts in Portsmouth.
Highlights
In doubles competition, the sister duo of Lacey Urban and Lexy Urban collected a 6-3 victory over Indiana-East's Amonette Theron and Laura Billing at No. 2 doubles. Lexy Urban also posted a strong 6-3, 6-3 performance over Billing at No. 4 singles.
At No. 5 singles, Antonia Ilea put up a strong contest against Indiana-East's Kerstin Ellis, falling in a high-quality 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-10 match.
Along with the above results, Brooklyn Foose and Vanessa Akuaku won three games before falling by a 6-3 margin at No. 1 doubles to Indiana-East's Eva Caballero and Linda Marino, while Akuaku and Lacey Urban won three games each in a set, Akuaku at No. 1 singles in the second set and Urban at No. 2 singles in the first set. Akuaku lost 6-1, 6-3 to Marino while Lacey Urban dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Caballero.
Shawnee State (3-9, 0-1 RSC) gets back to action Sunday afternoon with a huge River States Conference matchup against No. 22 ITA-NAIA and No. 25 NAIA Coaches Poll ranked Oakland City (4-7, 1-0 RSC) in Oakland City, Ind. The match will commence at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT.
