Akuaku, Foose claim wins at No. 1, No. 3 singles; Ilea/Foose combine for win at No. 2 doubles for SSU women in 5-2 setback to Mount Vernon Nazarene
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- The play of Vanessa Akuaku, Brooklyn Foose and Antonia Ilea were bright spots again for the Shawnee State women's tennis program as the trio were bright spots in each of their contests Wednesday evening -- with the Bears dropping a scant 5-2 decision to Mount Vernon Nazarene in a nonconference contest.
Foose and Ilea, who played together at No. 2 doubles, claimed a 6-3 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene's Deah Bresson and Andrea Green to lead the Bears at No. 2 doubles. Akuaku and Miranda Johnson, who played together at the No. 1 doubles position, fell by a 6-2 count to Mount Vernon Nazarene's Audrey Cochran and Kiersten Winey. SSU defaulted to Mount Vernon Nazarene at No. 3 doubles, giving the Cougars the doubles point.
In singles competition, Akauku and Foose were tremendous -- with Akauku winning a three-set thriller over Cochran at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (6-3), 7-5, 10-6 and Foose pulling out her own triumph in dramatic fashion with a 1-6, 6-2, 11-9 come-from-behind victory over Winey at No. 3 singles.
At the No. 2 singles slot, Ilea gave Bresson a run before falling in a valiant 7-5, 6-7 (0-6), 6-10 effort, while Johnson dropped a competitive 1-6, 7-6 (6-3), 3-10 decision to Green at No. 4 singles. Maggie Mae Clark competed at No. 5 singles against Sadie Ball, falling 2-6, 2-6 to conclude the match.
