SSU WT&F led by Evans, Kuhn, Middleton on final day of Charlotte 49er Classic
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The women's track and field program at Shawnee State got strong efforts from Kirsten Evans, Faith Kuhn and Elizabeth Middleton on the final day of the Charlotte 49er Classic, which was held at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.
Kuhn, who led the way with her throwing performances in the javelin and the shot put, notched a 71-foot, one-and-one-half inch throw in the javelin and a 33-foot, four-and-three-quarter inch shot put mark to finish 30th and 31st in both events, respectively. Kuhn beat three NCAA Division I throwers in the javelin and two NCAA Division I competitors in the shot put, respectively. Marli Marcum, who finished 33rd in the javelin, bettered two NCAA D-I athletes in the javelin herself.
Running-wise, Kirsten Evans set her second personal best time of the weekend as Evans' 2:30.11 in the 800 meter dash resulted in a 39th place finish -- and a time that was over six seconds faster than her previous personal best in the event. Evans also beat 10 NCAA Division I runners in the event in the process.
Just over one second behind Evans, Jessica Elick's time of 2:31.27 allowed the sophomore to better eight NCAA Division I harriers, while Amanda Salmons ran a 2:33.46 to finish 47th as Salmons outran six NCAA Division I athletes in the 800 in her own right.
Lastly, Shawnee State junior Beth Middleton notched a strong time on her own accord in the 3,000 meter run -- as Middleton's 11:37.14 bettered three NCAA Division I runners en route to a 13th place showing for the native of Olive Hill, Ky.
"Faith was recovering from injury for a while, and it's great to see her get back to her usual form, and continue to progress," Shawnee State Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Conner Flynn said. "Beth Middleton has also come a long way in the past year. I'm happy with the promising weekend that Kirsten Evans had, setting a new PB in both of her events.
Remaining efforts from Saturday's final day of action are as follows:
800 meter run -- Miranda Smith, 60th, 3:29.26
3,000 meter run -- Sydney Reed, 16th, 11:53.41; Natalie Brammer, 18th, 12:52.73 (personal best)
Shot put -- Tashawna Young, 40th, 24 feet, three-and-a-half inches
