Back on the grind: SSU VB resumes play with River States Conference opener at Indiana-Southeast

After playing 11 consecutive non-conference matches to open the season and going a solid 6-5 in those 11 matches, the volleyball program at Shawnee State will venture into River States Conference action Saturday afternoon when the Bears take on Indiana-Southeast (1-10) in a 12 p.m. matchup that will be held at the IU Southeast Activities Building in New Albany, Ind.

Previewing Indiana-Southeast

Indiana-Southeast is led by:

  • 5-6 freshman setter Carly Mason (224 assists)
  • 5-10 junior outside hitter Ella Brooks (137 digs, 122 kills)
  • 5-4 freshman defensive specialist Ella Davidson (134 digs)
  • 5-10 senior outside hitter Jessi Kramer (76 kills)
  • 6-1 senior middle blocker Haley Jaster (75 kills, 7 solo blocks, 26 assisted blocks)

Reviewing Shawnee State

  • Shawnee State is one of six programs in the River States Conference who hold a winning record heading into conference play. St. Mary-of-the-Woods (15-1), Indiana-Kokomo and Rio Grande (12-4), Indiana-East (10-6) and Midway (5-3) are the others.
  • While still a game above .500 in the win-loss column, the Bears have showcased their talent throughout the 2024 season. Shawnee State could easily be 10-1 -- as the Bears dropped two five-set decisions to Cumberlands, Ky. (19-3) and Cumberland, Tenn. (12-8) in late August. SSU also dropped two tight three-set decisions to Union Commonwealth, Ky. (22-25, 21-25, 20-25) and Lindsey Wilson (25-27, 23-25, 25-27) in contests that could've easily gone in the Bears' favor.
  • Shawnee State is led by:
    • 5-10 senior outside hitter Haidyn Wamsley (132 kills, 10 solo blocks, 26 assisted blocks, 36 total blocks, .240 attack percentage)
    • 6-1 senior middle hitter/blocker Kylee Gifford (101 kills, 14 solo blocks, 18 assisted blocks, 32 total blocks, .349 attack percentage)
    • 5-9 junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Megan Steele (136 digs, 81 kills)
    • 5-8 junior setter Reagan Lewis (192 assists)
    • 5-8 junior setter Makaela Lovely (183 assists, 68 digs)
    • 5-7 junior defensive specialist Ava Jenkins (167 digs)
    • 5-4 freshman defensive specialist Brooke Bossert (79 digs)
  • Along with the above seven individuals, the Bears have gotten consistent contributions up and down its roster, with freshmen Whytney Faulkner and Camille McIntosh combining for 112 kills and Camille Hall, Mikalyn Woods and Maelynn Howell rounding out a deep and talented frontline. Sam Schobelock's 43 digs on the year, Marleigh Albert's 11 assists in Shawnee State's last match against Campbellsville (Ky.), and Allison Pittman round out a roster that is loaded with depth in every area.
